Litter louts are biggest bugbear for summer drivers, says AA

Date: 15 July 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Just under 30% of motorists believe people throwing litter out of the window when driving is the most annoying habit in the summer, new research by the AA has revealed.

The next biggest pet hate was large groups of cyclists, followed by dodgy parkers and slow caravans, while 40 people mentioned that half-naked motorists were a frustration.

According to the breakdown giant, 17% of 18-24 year olds thought that throwing rubbish out of the window was annoying, compared to 32% of 45-54 year-old drivers.

The AA also said Scottish drivers are the least likely to highlight the issue, while those in the east Midlands are most likely to take offence at litter on the side of the road.

"Car litter louts are a needless menace who cost the country millions, spoil our environment and put road workers' lives at risk. There is no excuse for tossing out litter. Car occupants should bag it and bin it at home," said Edmund King, president of the AA."Drivers need to be more patient in the summer on the roads because anything can happen."

But he added: "By checking your car, route and being prepared, means that drivers are less likely to get hot under the collar and more likely to reach their destinations safely."

The top 10 summer pet hates are:

1. Car litter louts

2. Large groups of cyclists

3. Dodgy parkers

4. Slow caravans

5. Car ghetto blasters

6. Dawdling drivers

7. Sightseers

8. Tractor boys

9. Overloaded cars

10. Groups of motorcyclists
