MG GS priced from £14,995

Date: 15 June 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

MG has confirmed its GS crossover will be priced from £14,995.

The crossover is powered by the firm's 163hp 1.5-litre petrol engine which emits 139g/km of CO2 in the manual version and 141g/km of CO2 in automatic guise.

Three trim levels are offered with the GS - Explore, Excite and Exclusive. Standard kit includes cruise control, automatic headlamps and aircon, while the mid-level option adds DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and rear parking sensors.

The top-of-the-range model, meanwhile, comes with leather seats and a satnav.

"This car offers so much for comparatively little, making it the SUV to choose. The specification on these cars is phenomenal and when you add in the five-year warranty it's a no-brainer," said Matthew Cheyne, head of sales marketing for MG. "Choosing the MG GS will save money over more expensive SUVs. They will have all the specification they could want and still have money left to enjoy holidays or family days out."

"For us, this is a really big step, we had a steady start with the 6, the 3 was very well-received in retail and GS raises our profile even more," he told BusinessCar at last month's London motor show. "The important thing is that this is a very exciting sector of the market and this vehicle will appeal to a lot of people."

However, a diesel engine isn't on the cards at the moment: "Diesel depends on volume and where the diesel debate goes, it's starting to raise its head with the demonising of diesel," Cheyne said. "It's more about what is right for the market rather than ticking a box."

Though Cheyne admitted to being comfortable with MG's status as a predominantly retail brand, the company has recently appointed a new fleet boss, Ben Morris, who previously worked for Nexus Vehicle Management, and is looking for an increase in company car interactions. "I would like our core business to be profitable business through the dealer network, however if we can do some business through contract hire then we will look at it," he said. "Morris can raise our profile through leasing industry and parts of rental that are not about big discounts where we can build relationships."

The GS joins MG's line-up of the 3 supermini and 6 upper medium saloon, and arrives in dealerships from next week.
