More than 60% of UK's major roads within 20 miles of electric charging point

The RAC Foundation claims that 63% of the nation's Strategic Road Network is no more than 20 miles away from an electric charging point.

The Foundation also states that EV owners are no more than 20 miles away from charging points on 98% of the nation's motorways.

The SRN consists of trunk A-roads and motorways operated by Highways England, and the equivalents in Scotland and Wales.

This comes following a 2014 pledge by the Chancellor, George Osborne to ensure that by 2020-21 electric vehicle owners are within 20 from charging stations while using the nation's largest roads.

"Electric car drivers might still struggle to drive from Land's End to John o' Groats but they can now travel from Southampton to Perth in a relatively straight line and be confident of being able to 'fill up' along the way," said Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation.

Charging point reliability is still a concern for users, however, Gooding added: "Drivers need to know the charge point they intend to use is actually working. Previous research by the RAC Foundation, suggested that at any one time a third of charge points in London were out of action,"
