Nearly 200,000 prestige cars registered as SORN

Almost 200,000 luxury and sports cars are currently off the road in the UK, according to a new study.

Research from Direct Line shows there are 198,370 'prestige' vehicles registered with Statutory Off Road Notifications.

BMWs make up almost half of the total, with 91,585 models not being used, followed by Jaguar models (37,484) and Porsches (22,305).

The company warned owners to store the vehicles in garages and ensure they have adequate insurance when the cars are not being used as they could become a target for criminals.

"The number of luxury cars currently off the road is rather surprising. It's recommended that owners still consider the benefits of adequate insurance to protect high-value vehicles," said Nick Brabham, head of Direct Line's Select Premier Insurance. "Car badges and accessories from luxury brands are desirable to thieves looking to sell them on. If your car is off the road, make sure it's parked in a garage, with valuables out of sight or better still - out of the car completely."

"By failing to do so, this could put your vehicle at risk, and make it an appealing target for potential thieves," he added.
