New registrations increase by 8.4% in February

Date: 04 March 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

February new car registrations were 8.4% higher than in the same month in 2015, according to the latest Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures.

In total, 83,395 vehicles were sold during the month, making it the busiest February in terms of registrations since 2004.

Fleet demand fell by 1.4%, however it still retained its 53.1% share of the market.

The private sector drove most of the growth, with sales increasing by 22.6% compared with the same month in 2015.

"February is typically one of the quietest months of the year, ahead of March's plate change, but this positive performance is encouraging and puts the sector in a good position for the coming 12 months," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.

The Ford Fiesta topped the sales charts once again, with 4507 registrations over the month.
