New Sportback joins Audi A5 line-up

Audi has revealed first details of its A5 Sportback, which joins the three-door coupe in the line-up and will be available to order from mid-October.

Set to be revealed in full at the Paris motor show later this month, the new A5 Sportback is longer and wider than the car it replaces and showcases a sharper design and more advanced tech.

There'll be a choice of two petrol and three diesel engines producing between 190hp and 286hp. According to the premium carmaker, fuel consumption has been improved by up to 22% across the range.

Key for company car drivers will be the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel offering 190hp and 400Nm of torque. Available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive guises, CO2 emissions are as low as 108g/km meaning a 21% BIK tax band for the current 2016/17 year. Official fuel economy is up to 68.9mpg combined and when coupled with the seven-speed S Tronic automatic gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive system, 0-62mph can be achieved in 7.4 seconds.

Boot space has increased 15 litres up to 480 litres, with the rear seats folded this expands to 1300 litres of space, one of the biggest in the segment. There's more shoulder and rear legroom too and plenty of new safety tech included.

Among the new features are adaptive cruise control, which can now stop the car in traffic automatically, a parking assistance system, collision prevention aids and a traffic sign recognition tool.

Inside the cabin the A5 Sportback will be available with the firms excellent Virtual Cockpit, wireless phone charging will also be available plus, connectivity tech like Apple CarPlay.

More details around pricing and trim are expected to be announced at the show later in the month.
