No plans for UK Uber courier service

Date: 19 February 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Uber, which offers an alternative to service to minicabs, has denied it is planning to launch a courier delivery service in London.

Leading courier company Parcehero issued a report which claimed Uber will "turn the UK local express courier industry on its head."

The California-based company currently operates its on-demand service in Chicago, New York and San Francisco, with deliveries priced from $3/mile. (£2.10)

Like the passenger-carrying service Uber offers, the goods delivery app is able to provide tracking information for both the sender and recipient, and Uber claims the courier service enables deliveries to be made more quickly than by a standard courier, since there isn't a need for roundtrips to be undertaken.

Parcelhero said that it would be "hard for Uber to ignore the UK for long", thanks to a "lucrative" £7bn market.

The report case-studies on how the app works in the US - including its customers, which range from small shops, florists, and boutique stores - however, when contacted by What Van? a spokesman for Uber said: "We don't have any plans to launch it here [the UK]".

In an interview with Marketing Magazine in January 2015, Stephanie Smart, head of marketing for Uber said: "Los Angeles and New York are great examples of cities where Uber is pushing the boundaries - with courier service UberRush, for example, and food-delivery service Uber Fresh [now UberEats], which I am really keen to replicate here,

The spokesman told What Van? the quote had been taken out of context, and that Smart was talking about the firm's American products.

"I am not sure why Parcelhero wrote that [the report]", he added.
