On-street parking locator launched by TomTom

Mapping company TomTom has launched an on-street parking service which aims to help drivers find parking spaces on congested roads.
The firm said initially the service will be available for 25 European cities - including London and Birmingham in the UK - with further expansions planned.
According to TomTom, the new tool will work alongside an off-street parking data steam.
The tool uses the firm's GPS data to determine where motorists are likely to park and at what times of the day. With this information, the tool can then work out the chances of being able to find a space, as well as the average time spent searching for spots.
Additionally, where applicable and available pricing and restriction information will be published, while the company said the tool "represents the future of driving" where the service could be used by autonomous vehicles to find a space and park themselves.
"TomTom On-Street Parking offers drivers peace of mind and a less stressful parking experience, in addition to helping them save time and money," said Ralf-Peter Schäfer, head of traffic and travel information at TomTom. "The service also helps reduce congestion in cities and thus lower CO2 emissions, and enables cities to better understand and manage street parking inventory to improve urban mobility".
