Panasonic drops emissions by moving 20% of fleet to electric and hybrid cars

Electronics giant Panasonic has claimed it has cut its fleet emissions by more than a third in the last 12 years thanks to the use of electric and hybrid cars.

At present, the firm's 170 car fleet contains 19 plug-in hybrid vehicles with three more on order, plus another 10 hybrid cars.

Overall fleet emissions have dropped by 37.5% since 2008, the company claimed.

"Their use of PHEVs and hybrids is five to six times greater than other comparably-sized corporate fleets," said Debbie Jenkins, general manager, customer relationship management at Alphabet, which supplies and administers vehicles, as Panasonic has not  had a fleet manager since 2013.

Sustainable vehicles are given a higher ranking on vehicle choice lists, though the allocation policy is decided by the car's suitability for the role, with the company's fleet manager steering employees towards low-CO2 petrol or diesel cars if analytics suggests a PHEV may not be suitable.

Panasonic has also created a tax benefit calculator which can compare the total cost of ownership on up to eight vehicles at a time to aid employee vehicle choices.

The company also discourages staff from taking a PHEV purely for tax reasons if the vehicles are not suited for purpose and has switched drivers that try to take advantage of the low benefit-in-kind rates offered into diesels.
