Quarter of motorists involved in accident or near miss in bad weather

Date: 09 November 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

A quarter of motorists have had an accident or have been involved in a near miss while driving in poor conditions, new research from comparison website Confused.com has revealed.

The survey also found that a further 10% of British drivers avoid the roads entirely when it is cold.

According to statistics from the Department for Transport, there were more than 2,000 accidents in the UK that were caused by snow or ice on the roads last year.

The findings come after the Met Office has predicted the UK will suffer from the coldest winter in five years in 2016.

"With a cold snap expected over the next few weeks, we're urging motorists to be extra careful when driving this winter. This type of weather requires the most care and preparation if you're to stay safe," said Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com. "When the weather turns and you're out in your vehicle, it can be tempting to put your foot down and drive home as quickly as possible.

"However, icy roads and excessive speeds spell trouble. As well as being more vigilant in these conditions, drivers need to plan their journeys in advance," she added.
