Second VW ID concept previewed ahead of Detroit reveal

Date: 22 December 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Volkswagen has previewed the second model in its 'ID' range of future multi-function driverless vehicles ahead of its debut at the Detroit Motor Show early next month.

This second concept car follows on from the company's initial concept that was shown at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year. Volkswagen has claimed that this latest tranche of models will be as era-defining and as ground-breaking as the original Volkswagen Beetle.

Though details are scant at this stage, VW confirmed the showcar has two electric motors and four-wheel drive.

Like the ID concept shown at Paris, the new vehicle will also be able to drive fully autonomously. The driver has to just press on the VW logo on the steering wheel and it will retract into the cockpit, leaving the car driving itself.

VW claimed the Detroit concept "forges links between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future."

Don't expect to see any production-ready Volkswagen ID models until 2018 at the earliest, with first cars hitting the road in 2020.
