SmartWitness to launch van safety camera at CV Show

Date: 03 March 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Vehicle camera company SmartWitness will launch a van-specific safety camera at this year's Commercial Vehicle Show.

Designed to fit commercial vehicles weighing between 1.5 and 4.5 tonnes, the product, known as VanProtect, aims to give van fleets extra crash protection.

The package includes a forward-facing video camera, a 120-degree rear view infrared camera and a dashboard-mounted monitor.

Engaging reverse on the vehicle automatically activates the rear-view camera, which SmartWitness says will help motorists eliminate blind-spots and reduce stress.

In the event of an incident the camera has G-force sensors, which can calculate the speed, and force of a collision, with the processor in the camera automatically buffering 10 seconds around the impact so that all of the details leading up to the incident are recorded.

"Van fleets tend to get involved in more road incidents that haulage fleets.  In the past few years van fleets have been targeted by criminal gangs making bogus claims for whiplash injuries, and you simply have to have video evidence to get rid of these kinds of fraudulent claims," said SmartWitness CEO, Paul Singh."Fleet operators often comment that van fleet drivers need that level of extra driver education and our system will notify fleet managers of who is in need of extra tuition to control bad driving habits."
