Toyota and Lexus to recall 73,000 vehicles over fuel leak issue

Date: 29 June 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Toyota and Lexus are recalling nearly 73,000 vehicles to prevent fuel from leaking out of the cars.

The recall affects Japanese-built Prius, Auris and CT200h models manufactured between April 2006 and August 2015.

The cars affected were equipped with a canister mounted in the fuel tank and there is a possibility that cracks could develop in the coating of the canister which could expand over time and leak fuel when the vehicle has a full tank.

Toyota and Lexus said they are writing to affected owners, and that dealers will replace the canister for free, with the work taking between two and three hours to complete.

The firms are also recalling 34,155 Prius and CT200h vehicles built between October 2008 and August 2012 which are equipped with curtain shield air bags in the driver and passenger side roof rails, which could cause the airbag to partially inflate, and, in limited circumstances and enter the interior of the vehicle.

Retention brackets on the curtain shield air bag inflators will be installed at no cost by the dealer.  The retention brackets serve as protectors to prevent the inflator chambers from entering the vehicle interior if separation occurs, with the repair will taking two to four hours.
