ULEV registrations up by 94% in 2015

Plug-in vehicle registrations reached a record high last year, with 28,188 ultra-low emission vehicles registered - more the previous five years' totals rolled into one.

According to Go Ultra Low, it represented a 94% increase over 2014's total.

Last year, plug-in hybrid vehicles proved to be the most popular ULEVs among car buyers, with 18,254 registrations, a 137% increase on 2014, while fully electric vehicle sales rose by 48%,with 9934 sales recorded.

ULEVs were most popular in the South East of England, with 9186 ULEV sales. The South West was ranked second (4420 registered) and the West Midlands third (3371 registered). According to Go Ultra Low, all regions recorded improved year-on-year registrations for plug-in cars.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ruled the registration charts for a second year running, 118% up on the previous year's figures with 11,681 units sold. The top three from 2014 remains change as the Nissan Leaf ranks second with a 29% hike in uptake while the BMW i3 continues to enjoy popularity among environmentally conscious motorists, coming third once more with registrations 59% up year-on-year.

"The UK has one of the fastest growing ultra-low emission vehicle markets in the world and these record figures show more and more people across the country are enjoying the benefits of this cheap-to-run and green technology," said transport minister Andrew Jones.

"British drivers have a wider choice of vehicles than ever before and we have increased our support for plug-in vehicles to £600 million over the next five years to cut emissions, create jobs and support our cutting-edge industries," Jones added.
