VW 'car of the future' ID concept revealed at Paris motor show

Volkswagen has revealed its ID electric concept car at the Paris motor show.

Billed as being as revolutionary as the original Beetle or Golf, the ID is, according to VW, capable of travelling up to 372 miles between charges, and hints at a Golf-sized production car by 2020.

According to VW the production version will be launched at a comparable price to a well-equipped Golf, while the German giant said that by 2025, the ID will be capable of fully automated driving. In autonomous mode, the steering wheel will retract into the dashboard.

The concept is underpinned by a completely new platform, called MEB, upon which future EV VWs will use, while the ID is powered by a 168hp electric motor, and firm also set itself the ambitious goal of selling million EVs by 2025.

Volkswagen also announced its intention to create 'Volkswagen IDs' for customers, which will allow them to create a profile stored in the cloud, and saves seat, aircon, radio and sound system settings.

VW said that drivers will be recongised by their smartphone - or digital key - so the car will know who gets behind the wheel, and in the event of an accident, emergency contact details for family and colleagues are stored.

The ID concept also introduces the idea of 'Home-net', which will allow the vehicle to connect to a house. VW said that cameras installed in the home will enable motorists to check on their house while they're out.

Additionally, Volkswagen announced its intention for the vehicle's boot to act as mailbox on the move, with a courier being able to locate the car by GPS and open the boot via an app, with the owner receiving an email as soon as the parcel has been delivered.
