VW emissions scandal: Fixes won't affect MPG or drivability

Date: 14 January 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Paul Willis, Volkswagen UK's managing director, has said that 'fixing' the 1.2 million UK vehicles affected by the emissions scandal would not hit fuel consumption figures.

Willis, who was giving evidence to the environment, food and rural affairs committee, added that there would be "no difference in drivability", and that was no evidence the scandal, which broke out last September, would affect residual values of vehicles hit. That is in contrast to recent figures from residual value expert Glass's which suggests that values fell to 1.7 percentage points below the market average in December.

He also added that because there are no losses, UK owners would not be offered compensation - a contrast to America, where owners are being offered vouchers worth $1000 (£693).

"When there is no loss then there is no need for compensation," Willis told the MPs.

"We do need to regain the trust of our customers, which is why we are going to fix the vehicles," he added.

Willis also confirmed that VW would begin to fix the vehicles from March, and that the process should take less than an hour to complete.
