Kia has revealed its all-new Optima Sportwagen plug-in hybrid model at the Geneva motor show.

The model will go on sale in the UK in Q3 of this year, and it will be powered by a 156hp 2.0-litre petrol engine, which is mated to a 50kW electric motor, the same as what's in the saloon.

The firm's engineers are targeting a pure-electric range of over 60km (37 miles), which would put it in the lowest 9% 2017/18 BIK band, the Korean manufacturer said.

The saloon version emits 37g/km of CO2. According to Kia, the model could emit 34g/km of CO2.

The car is able to achieve its electric-only range thanks to a number of features to increase battery efficiency, including a regenerative braking system and a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, which can provides heating and aircon to the driver, shutting off ventilation to other areas, which reduces the strain on the battery.

Inside, the model is equipped with a number of PHEV-specific features, including an instrument panel, which displays information about the powertrain.

Kia's PHEV estate also contains the firm's latest sat-nav system. Housed in an eight-inch touchscreen, it can also display the current EV range and the location of charging points.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity systems are also offered as standard, while Kia's suite of 'connected services' provide live traffic updates, speed camera alerts and weather forecasts.

In addition, users can charge smartphones wirelessly while on the move.

Standard safety kit includes the firm's advanced smart cruise control system, lane-keeping assist function and the company's autonomous emergency braking tool.

"We expanded the Optima range in the third quarter of 2016 with the new Optima Sportswagon and plug-in hybrid saloon versions - each respectively accounting for 62% and 13% of Optima sales. With a clear demand for both of these models, the Sportswagon plug-in hybrid combines the benefits of the two and completes the Optima line-up," said Michael Cole, chief operating officer at Kia Europe.  "The introduction of eco-friendly vehicles such as the Optima Sportswagon plug-in hybrid will ensure Kia remains on course to achieve its mission of improving average fleet fuel efficiency by 25% by 2020, compared to 2014 levels."
