66% of accountants unaware of digital mileage report software

Date: 12 June 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Two thirds of those working in the accountancy industry are unaware of digital options to help compile mileage reports, a new survey has claimed.

According to telematics company Abax, 66% of those surveyed at accounting show Accountex 2017 did not know that digital mileage claim technology existed.

However, once respondents had been told about the software, the company said that 90% of those surveyed believed that such a solution would reduce driver administration time, 85% stated it would improve reporting accuracy and 83% said it would improve the reliability of reporting.

Chris Millar, Abax UK chief executive, said a lack of awareness within the accountancy industry is holding back the number of systems available on the marketplace.

"The majority of people we spoke to worked in a company with between one and 20 employees, but whether your business has one vehicle or 1,000, the same HMRC legislation applies and we find the vast majority of companies do not know all the rules and are leaving themselves open to large tax penalties," Millar said.

He added: "Failure to comply with HMRC standards has seen businesses and individuals collect five-figure penalties from the tax authorities. It made us think that if this lack of awareness exists with the accountancy industry ? then how are other industries supposed to comply?"
