All-new DS 7 Crossback SUV unveiled ahead of Geneva debut

Date: 01 March 2017   |   Author: James Richardson

First details of the all-new DS 7 Crossback SUV have been revealed ahead of the car's public debut at the Geneva motor show. The company's largest car to go on sale to date will take on rivals like the Volkswagen Tiguan, BMW X3, Audi Q3 and the Mercedes GLC.

Like other DS products, the new DS 7 will focus more on luxury and refinement than its Peugeot-Citroen stablemates, while the new car will also feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, advanced interior technology and autonomous driving capability.

At the front, a prominent chrome-edged hexagonal grille, which stands proud of the angular LED headlight clusters, dominates the car's design. Within this grille sits a large DS badge, while below it is a large air-intake that's flanked by foglights, with vertical LED daytime running lights at the extreme edges of the car's front.

There's also a strong crease down the flanks that runs from the front headlight clusters to the rear, while the side windows are surrounded by even more chrome. There are also chrome roof rails on top of the roof. At the back, the slender all-LED rear-light clusters are also surrounded by chrome, with more chrome trim extending right across the tailgate, linking the tail lights.

Inside, buyers have a choice of four different 'Inspirations' - Bastille, Rivoli, Opera and Performance Line - each of which give the interior a different ambience and are upholstered differently.

Meanwhile, there's also plenty of tech, including autonomous driving ability, a digital instrument cluster, self-parking technology and even night vision, thanks to an infrared camera. It also comes with attention-monitoring technology that can tell if the driver's attention is wandering and alerts them to the imminent danger.

Under the bonnet, there's the usual array of petrol and diesel engines to choose from, including a 18hp  and 225hp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which can be had with an all-new eight-speed automatic gearbox and is available across the range. In terms of diesels, there's also a 130hp 1.6 (which can be had with a six-speed manual, as well as the eight-speed auto) and a 180hp 2.0-litre unit.

Alongside these will be a 300hp plug-in hybrid version that will be capable of travelling up to 37 miles on electric power alone and which also provides four-wheel drive capability, as one of the electric motors powers the rear wheels. This combines a 200hp petrol engine with two electric motors and the new eight-speed automatic gearbox. Charging the batteries takes between two and a half and four and a half hours.

The new DS 7 Crossback also debuts active scan suspension, which uses a camera and sensors to work out what the road ahead will be doing and sets up the suspension accordingly for optimum comfort.

Prices and specifications have yet to be announced, but expect the car to go on sale in the UK later this year, priced from around £35,000.
