Audi reveals new A7 Sportback

Date: 20 October 2017   |   Author: Rachel Boagey

Audi has unveiled its second-generation Audi A7 Sportback ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles motor show in November.

The new A7 has evolved from its predecessor with new design, technology and powertrain options.

The A7 is 4,969mm long, has a wheelbase of 2,926mm and is 1,908mm wide, but stands only 1,422mm high.

The interior of the new Audi A7 Sportback has been conceived according to what Audi calls its new design language, with an emphasis on horizontal lines and a sleek instrument panel.

The 10.1in display is tilted towards the driver, which Audi says is part of its progressive design and intuitive functionality.

Inside, Audi has replaced the rotary pushbutton and the conventional buttons and controls of the previous model with two large, high-resolution touch displays.

The AI button will enable the driver to activate the Audi AI remote parking pilot and the Audi AI remote garage pilot, which will be made available during 2018.

In addition to the Audi AI systems, the A7 features a total of 39 driver assistance systems to make daily use easier for the driver. They are split into three packages: the Audi AI parking package (gradual introduction beginning in 2018), the City assist package with the new crossing assist, and the Tour assist package.

Many aspects of the front and rear axles are new. Customers can choose between four suspension set-ups: a conventional steel spring suspension; the sport suspension, which lowers ride height by 10mm; electronically controlled damping and the self-levelling adaptive air suspension.

All A7 Sportback models will be equipped with a new mild hybrid system (MHEV). With the V6 engines, this uses a 48V primary electrical system. A belt alternator starter (BAS) works together with a lithium-ion battery, achieving a recuperation performance of up to 12kW when braking.

The car will initially launch with the 3.0 V6 TFSI petrol engine. The V6 turbo produces 340hp, propelling the coupe from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds and to a top speed of 155mph. In the NEDC, the entry version of the Audi A7 55 TFSI returns up to 41.5mpg, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 154g.

The 3.0 TFSI is paired with a seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, and and its output is proficiently managed by the latest iteration of the quattro drivetrain, can activate rear-wheel drive as needed.

Additional six- and four-cylinder engines, both petrol and diesel, will follow shortly after the start of production.

Order books in the UK open in early 2018, with first deliveries scheduled for the second quarter of 2018. First models will cost around £56,000.
