Audi reveals power-based numbering structure

Date: 24 August 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Audi has changed the naming structure of its models to represent power outputs instead of engine sizes.

The names of the model series from A1 to Q7 will remain, however after that badge, two number combinations will replace the previous names.

Power outputs are quoted in kilowatts. For example, the 30 designation will apply to all vehicles with outputs of between 81 and 96kW (110hp and 130hp) and 45 representing outputs of between 169 and 185kW (230hp and 252hp).

According to Audi, the combinations increase in increments five, meaning the spectrum will range from the Audi A1 25 TFSI with 70kW (95hp) to the Audi A8 55 TFSI with 250kW (340hp).

Audi said "a special place" will be reserved for high-end, high-performance S and RS models as well as the Audi R8 supercar "in reference to their top position in the model range".

"As alternative drive technologies become increasingly relevant, engine displacement as a performance attribute is becoming less important to our customers," said Dietmar Voggenreiter, board of management member for sales and marketing at Audi. "The clarity and logic of structuring the designations according to power output makes it possible to distinguish between the various performance levels."

The changes are set to be implemented when the next-gen Audi A8 arrives in the autumn with the rest of the range switching over to the new system by next summer, Audi said.

The eight new designations are:

30 for models between 110 and 130hp

35 for models between 147 and 161hp

40 for models between 167 and 200hp

45 for models between 230 and 252hp

50 for models between 281 and 308hp

60 for models between 433 and 461hp

70 for models with more than 536hp
