Dartford Crossing excluded from air quality assessments as it's a 'rural road'

Date: 06 March 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Nitrogen dioxide figures from one of London's busiest roads, the Dartford Crossing, have not been reported to the European Union because it was classified as a "rural road".

The Dartford Crossing (officially known as the A282) carries 50 million vehicles a year, and the error has come to light after the BBC obtained a letter from Therese Coffey, the minister responsible for improving air quality at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, admitting the mistake.

The error - which has been rectified - was discovered after Dartford Borough Council found the crossing was not listed in the Government's air quality projections, despite council data showing the crossing has been above EU air quality targets for the last 15 years.

"The A282 in Dartford does not appear in the National Air Quality Plan for nitrogen dioxide because it was classified as rural and was, therefore, excluded from DEFRA's air quality modelling assessment," she said, blaming the Department for Transport for the error.

But the DfT said DEFRA had classed the A282 as a rural road, however the DfT is in charge of classifying roads.

DEFRA has said it will now include the crossing in future projections to the European Union.
