Diesel still rules when it comes to renting

Date: 26 May 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Diesel is still the preferred choice when it comes to renting vehicles, new data from Europcar has suggested.

According to its findings, 63% of drivers would prefer to rent a diesel vehicle, while 78% said they didn't want to hire an electric vehicle.

The motorists surveyed all use the 'Model Guaranteed' rental service, which ensures the driver will get exactly what they book.

Almost a quarter (23.8%) said they preferred petrol-powered vehicles, while 4.7% said they would want to guarantee a hybrid.

Europcar's findings suggests that business drivers still have 'range anxiety' issues posed by alternatively-fuelled vehicles.

"We are working hard to overcome motorists' 'range anxiety' about electric vehicles", said Gary Smith, managing director of Europcar UK. "It is also interesting to see the continued appetite for diesel despite recent Government and media focus on this fuel.  It appears that UK motorists are wise to the fact that the newest diesels - Euro6 - which make up all of the Europcar UK fleet. are widely regarded as delivering great fuel economy as well as reducing CO2 emissions."
