Facelifted VW Golf priced from £17,625

Date: 01 February 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Order books for the updated Volkswagen Golf open tomorrow, with the car priced from £17,625 - the same as the outgoing model.

VW claimed on average the new variants costs £600 less than the current version across the range.

The new Golf features new front and rear bumpers, LED daytime running lights, and new wheel designs and materials.

VW has also introduced an 85hp 1.0-litre petrol engine to the range. It emits 109g/km of CO2 and returns 58.9mpg, placing it in the 20% 2017/18 BIK bracket.

The most frugal engine, meanwhile, is the 115hp 1.6-litre diesel unit that emits 106g/km of CO2, placing it in the 23% 2017/18 BIK bracket. In comparison, the 110hp 1.6-litre diesel in the Hyundai i30 emits 94g/km of CO2 and returns 78.5mpg, putting it in the 20% 2017/18 BIK bracket.

Other engines, including a plug-in GTE model, are also due, but won't go on sale until later this year.

A new seven-speed automatic gearbox has also been added to the range, and Volkswagen claimed the new 'box reduces CO2 emissions by up to 10g/km of CO2 across the range.

"The arrival of a new or updated Golf is always a special occasion, but in 2017 the debut of this car with revised styling and new engines really does feel extra special," said Allison Jones, director of Volkswagen in the UK. "The updated Golf will, I'm sure, retain its place at the head of the compact car class but, just as importantly, will strengthen its place in the hearts of countless UK owners thanks to its exceptional quality, classless appeal and, now more than ever, its hugely competitive pricing and whole-life value."

First deliveries for the new Golf arrive at the end of March.
