The start point for the best source of fleet information

BMW 5 Series Touring displayed at Geneva motor show

Date: 07 March 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The next generation of a popular fleet estate car, the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring, has been shown at the Geneva motor show.

Following in the footsteps of the 5 Series Saloon - described in our review as "one of the best all-round saloons on the market"- the estate is due to arrive in the UK in June.

From launch, four engines will be offered - two diesel and two petrol - with power outputs ranging from 190hp to 340hp.

Of interest to fleets will be the 520d model, powered by a 190hp 2.0-litre diesel unit, which emits 114g/km of CO2 and returns 65.6mpg, placing it in the 22% 2017/18 BIK bracket.

In the saloon, the 520d offers CO2 emissions of 107g/km and returns 70.6mpg.

The more powerful six-cylinder 530d, meanwhile, is powered by a 265hp unit that emits 131g/km of CO2 and returns 56.4mpg. A four-wheel drive option is also offered - badged 530d XDrive - carrying a premium of £2,000, with increased emissions (144g/km) and a lower mpg figure (51.3mpg).

Inside

Prices start at £38,385 for the 520d, rising to £49,460 for the four-wheel drive-only 540i XDrive, which is powered by a 340hp 3.0-litre petrol engine that emits 172g/km of CO2 and returns 37.6mpg, placing it in the 33% 2017/18 BIK bracket.

Like the saloon, manual gearboxes are not offered, with each engine paired to the company's eight-speed automatic 'box.

The new 5 Series Touring is longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model, while the wheelbase has been extended by 7mm to 2,975mm, increasing space for occupants and improving comfort levels.

Inside, luggage capacity with the seats up has been improved by 10 litres to 570 litres, while the seats-down load has grown by 30 litres to 1,700 litres - 120 litres less than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate.

Side

BMW also claimed it is the first car maker to offer a secure cloud-based server to exchange and edit emails using the Microsoft Exchange function allowing addresses to be imported into the sat-nav.

Car-to-car communication is also offered, allowing 'connected' BMWs to warn each other of upcoming hazards, such as traffic jams and accidents.

Standard safety kit, meanwhile, includes lane-keeping assist, a front and rear collision warning detection system, a side-collision warning system, and the company's remote control parking function, which allows the driver to move the vehicle from outside, using the key.

First UK cars are expected to hit the roads in June.
