Fleet management software provider DCML has claimed that the end is nigh for keeping track of vehicles using paper following an announcement that its system can be fully maintained using a tablet.

According to the company, fleets using its DCM Connected system are able to save time compared with those who use paper-based systems to manage vehicles. The tool is also able to eliminate admin errors, which affect 8% of all fleets.

Its managing director has predicted that by the end of the decade many fleets will not keep paper records.

The tool can monitor and record the driving traits of every driver, measuring behaviour and the most likely areas of maintenance that will require attention.

A traffic light system - with red indicating a poor or reckless driver and green someone who is more careful - is assigned to every driver. A flag has also been developed, allowing fleet managers to easily find problematic staff members.

DCML has also added accident reconstruction capabilities to DCM Connected, meaning that the system will take a snapshot of an accident immediately before, during and after impact. It will then be able to ascertain in detail what happened, making costly liability disputes "almost obsolete", which could reduce insurance premiums.

The system can also log the number of miles travelled, provide updates on fuel usage and track the location of individual vehicles. It is also possible to set up alerts to inform a fleet manager whenever specific vehicles enter the London Congestion Charge zone.

"Our full analysis is available whether in the office or outside in forecourt or elsewhere, as it can be used to deliver a 100% paperless management system," said Vince Powell, DCML managing director. "There is no doubt that by 2020 many fleets will be a completely paperless environment."
