Hydrogen vehicles added onto fleets in Swindon

Date: 03 May 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Three businesses in Swindon have taken on three hydrogen vehicles as part of their vehicle fleets as part of the town's Hydrogen Hub project.

Fleet management company Arval has taken on a Toyota Mirai, as has building society Nationwide, while The National Trust is leasing a Hyundai ix35.

The scheme aims to establish the town as a centre of excellence for hydrogen, and the town plans to use the technology in a number of domestic and commercial applications as the project looks at the practicalities of running the vehicles.

The three cars will be used as pool vehicles by the respective companies and are leased by Arval. There are currently two hydrogen fuelling stations in the town, and Arval said there plans are in place to open up a third.

"Leasing more than 160,000 vehicles in the UK, Arval has a long history of pioneering low carbon vehicle technologies and we're excited to be leading the way once again as hydrogen fuel cell cars enter the market," said Paul Marchment, development manager at Arval. "Hydrogen technology offers the driver great benefits, combining a 300 mile range with zero emissions."

Gary Thomas, employee support services manager at Nationwide added: "Nationwide has a vision to be leading performers for environmental sustainability in the UK financial services sector, and as the world's largest building society we recognise our responsibility to build a truly sustainable business. This is very much on Nationwide's agenda, and a great initiative to our staff travelling between sites in the Swindon area."
