London introduces Air Quality Business Fund to help companies adopt EVs

Date: 26 June 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Businesses in London can now apply for a share of £1 million to help deploy electric cars and charging points to reduce pollution in the capital.

Launched today by the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, the new Air Quality Business Fund aims to create five 'Business Low Emission Neighborhoods'.

The five winners will be able to use their £200,000 shares to help encourage Londoners to walk, cycle or use public transport instead of driving, install EV charging points and reduce pollution from deliveries by working with adjoining companies.

The launch of the scheme coincides with Khan's formal response to the government's Air Quality Plan consultation. He claimed the draft document - published just before the general election following a legal challenge - is a "backwards step" towards tacking pollution in the UK.

In his response, he once again called on ministers to introduce a national scrappage scheme and reform VED rates to discourage the purchase of diesel vehicles.

Khan also wrote to Michael Gove, the new environment minister, calling for him to "significantly strengthen" the plan.

The final Air Quality Plan must be submitted to the European Commission by the end of next month.

"The Government can no longer continue to bury its head in the sand about our toxic air," Khan said. "It is literally a case of life and death and I urge government to tackle this challenge immediately, because its current Air Quality Plan quite frankly is not fit for purpose.

"Future generations of Londoners will not forgive us if we fail to take the bold action needed to address the scourge of pollution once and for all.

"The good news is that there is still time to introduce the kind of measures that will make a real impact, such as introducing a vehicle scrappage fund. Now is the time to show real leadership and deliver."
