London to get 1,500 new electric vehicle charging points by mid-2018

Date: 03 August 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Transport for London (TfL) and the Greater London Authority (GLA) have announced almost £4.5 million has been allocated to London boroughs to install new electric charging points on the capital's streets.

A total of 25 boroughs will each receive up to £300,000 in order to install up to 1,500 units in residential areas. These new charging points are an addition to the network of 300 rapid chargers that TfL said would be put in place by 2020.

The new charging points will be either specially constructed freestanding units or fixed to existing lampposts. London's transport body said it would allocate additional funds to interested boroughs for further expansion in 2018/19 "once TfL, London Councils and the GLA are happy with progress being made".

According to TfL, the new units "will provide residential charge points to assist those without access to off-street parking".

Each borough has sought funding based on a perceived level of demand and electric vehicle take-up. According to TfL, teams from the boroughs will now identify sites where the points could be installed.

The £4.48 million pot has come from the government's Office for Low Emission Vehicles' (OLEV) Go Ultra Low City scheme, a nationwide competition to fund an increase in electric vehicle usage.

The points should be installed by the middle of next year.

"This substantial investment in electric charging points will make a real difference, making electric vehicles an easier and more practical option for Londoners across our city," said mayor of London Sadiq Khan. "We have a bold ambition to make London's transport system zero emission by 2050, and working with boroughs to roll out more charging infrastructure is a vital part of making this a reality."

Lilli Matson, TfL's head of strategy and outcome planning, said: "We're delighted to be awarding this funding to these boroughs all of whom, like us, are determined to make London's transport greener and its air quality better.  We'd also like to thank these boroughs for being at the absolute forefront of the move to electric vehicles."

Alex Smith, managing director of Nissan, said: "We've been saying for a long time that the future is electric and so we welcome any investment which improves charging infrastructure and encourages people to switch to zero emission vehicles. Electric cars will have a fundamental impact on the shift from fossil fuels to renewables and this latest announcement shows that the tipping point for electric vehicles is rapidly approaching."
