Londoners most reliant on satnavs to navigate

Date: 05 June 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Londoners are far more reliant on satnavs to help get them around than drivers in other areas of the UK, new research has suggested.

According to data from taxi app MyTaxi, 88% of drivers in the capital use the devices on a regular basis compared with the national average of 76%.

Those in Wales, meanwhile, are the least reliant on satnavs, with 66% reporting they regularly the devices, MyTaxi said.

Its survey also found that 20% of motorists in London can't navigate home without the help of a satnav, while 65% admitted they would be lost without one when travelling along unfamiliar roads.

More than half (62%) also admitted they 'switch off' when using the devices, paying little attention to road signs or landmarks. MyTaxi claims this is costing them up to 100 hours a year in extra journey times thanks to drivers "blindly" following directions and not using their initiative.

Despite an apparent reliance on the devices, 13% of the 2,000 drivers surveyed said that satnavs rarely take them on the fastest route, while 39% claim their devices never take them to their final destination.

These findings back up research by University College London which last year suggested those who take the electronic lead switch off areas of the brain that would otherwise be used to work out routes.

Andy Jones, general manager at MyTaxi, said: "Satnav technology is undoubtedly a huge help to many people but it is certainly not flawless and the results can be both frustrating and comical. There really is no substitute for real local knowledge when it comes to navigating through traffic and finding the quickest routes to a destination."
