Major expansion planned for London EV charging network

Date: 09 January 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Nearly 1,000 new electric vehicle (EV) charge points are set to be rolled out across London.

Charge point firm Bluepoint London says it has secured partnerships with 20 London boroughs to transform the city's EV infrastructure, including an agreement signed with Tower Hamlets at the end of 2017.

Of the £100million budget the company has allocated for the city, it says only £25million has so far been spent, and it has close to 1,000 charge points stored in a warehouse ready to be deployed under its Source London scheme.

The announcement comes following a surge in demand in 2017, with the number of monthly charges through Source London more than doubling during the year.

With the existing network numbering just over 800 charge points, there is potential for dramatic expansion, and Source London is calling for support from authorities to allow it to do this.

Managing director Christophe Arnaud said: "Source London continues to be London's leading charging network and we are extremely pleased to be working with 20 boroughs across London.

"Nevertheless, we are still far behind other capitals and witness daily the appetite of Londoners for electric vehicles.

"Providing them with the right infrastructure is essential and only an immediate collaborative effort from all of London's local authorities will enable us to find the best possible locations for the 1,000 points we have waiting in storage."
