One car was written off every 90 seconds last year, new research has revealed.
According to analysis by Churchill Car Insurance, 384,000 vehicles were written off last year, meaning that one in 83 drivers have had their vehicle mothballed.
Data from the insurer also found that young males - those aged under 25 - are almost twice as likely to have a car written off than any other age group combined, with one in 45 young males having written off a car.
Men across the board are more likely to be involved in a car accident that writes off their vehicle, with male drivers accounting for 57% of all write-off claims each year and females being involved in 43% of accidents.
Churchill also said that last year 34,000 claims were made on vehicles five years old or less, with the average value standing at £9,000.
"When a car is written off it is either the result of it being unsafe for the road, or because repairing it would be uneconomical in comparison to its value. Many people assume that this is the result of a major collision, but a car can be written off for any number of reasons," said Steve Barrett, head of car insurance at Churchill.
