New EV charging points to electrify rural Devon towns

Date: 15 March 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Electric vehicle charging company Instavolt has signed an agreement with a Devon council to install points in rural towns.

As part of the agreement, eight rapid chargers will be installed in the Mid Devon area, allowing electric vehicle drivers to recharge batteries up to 80% in half an hour.

Motorists will be able to charge on a pay-as-you-go basis, with each recharge costing £6-7, a spokeswoman for Instavolt told BusinessCar.

This price puts the cost of recharging in mid Devon on a par with that of the nationwide Ecotricity network.

The points will be installed in Crediton, Cullompton and Tiverton, with further locations being surveyed, the spokeswoman added.

According to Instavolt, Mid Devon Council will receive revenue from the chargers for the next 30 years.

The council claimed the installation of the points will help drive down emissions in the area, and added money received from the points could be invested into other green measures.

"Mid Devon District Council is pioneering in its use of green technologies and we're delighted to help them take this even further with the installation of rapid electric vehicle charging points," said Tim Payne, CEO of InstaVolt. "The use of electric vehicles is set to increase dramatically over the coming years and thanks to the council's forward-thinking attitude, residents and visitors to Mid Devon can rest assured that they'll be able to charge up quickly and easily if they adopt these eco-friendly vehicles."

Councillor Ray Stanley, cabinet member for housing at Mid Devon District Council, said: "We are committed to making Mid Devon an even better place to live, work and visit and the environment plays a big part in this. Creating the right infrastructure will help us to embrace the use of electric vehicles locally and improve air quality across the region."
