New Ssangyong Rexton SUV set for 2017 launch

Date: 30 March 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

SsangYong has revealed the next generation of its Rexton large SUV. The car is due to arrive in the UK in September or October, and will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, likely to be a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol.

These engines will be mated to a rear- biased four-wheel drive system, and the South Korean company claimed the model will be a class-leading contender in its segment, with rivals including the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and the Peugeot 5008.

According to SsangYong, the Rexton draws heavily from the LIV-2 concept car shown at the Paris motor show last year, with the interior featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity systems as standard as well as a 9.2-inch touchscreen.

It'll come with a host of safety features too, including nine airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot detection and a 3D around-view monitoring system that gives the driver a 360° view around the vehicle during tight low-speed manoeuvres such as parking.

In terms of design, the Rexton features new headlight clusters, along with a shallow hexagonal grille with chrome trim as well as LED daytime running lights set in the air-intakes The bonnet is heavily creased, as are the car's sides, while the black plastic trim around the wheelarches and the car's undersides hints at its off-road pretensions.

The Rexton will join up with the South Korean brand's range of models that includes the Korando and Tivoli SUVs.
