Next-gen Audi A8 to feature mild hybrid system

Date: 14 June 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Audi has confirmed its forthcoming A8 luxury saloon will be fitted with a mild hybrid system as standard.

Although it won't be powerful enough to drive the car without the help of an internal combustion engine, the more powerful battery will allow a larger number of systems to operate on electricity.

Audi claims the new A8 - which makes its debut next month in Barcelona - will be more efficient and quieter as a result of the system being installed.

It works between 34 and 99mph and the vehicle will be able to coast for up to 40 seconds without the need for the engine to be running, the German brand claimed.

The new A8 will also be equipped with a forward-facing camera that analyses the road ahead and decides whether or not the car can coast. The system recovers energy from braking applications - akin to how Formula One cars recharged KERS units a few years ago - with Audi predicting it can save 0.7 litres of fuel every 62 miles during normal use.
