Next Nissan Leaf to come with autonomous driving capabilities

Date: 23 June 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Nissan has confirmed the next generation of its Leaf electric car will offer partial autonomous driving capabilities.

The car will feature the firm's Pro Pilot technology, which will allow driverless operation on single-lane roads, with the technology controlling the steering, acceleration and braking of the vehicle.

Nissan said the device would assist drivers in heavy traffic or during long commutes.

The Japanese firm added that it hopes to eventually allow vehicles to navigate city-centre junctions by itself.

"The ultimate embodiment of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the new Nissan Leaf will be the most advanced, accessible EV on the market, today," said Gareth Dunsmore, director of electric vehicle at Nissan Europe. "Adding ground-breaking Pro Pilot technology to the new Nissan Leaf will prove invaluable in unlocking many of the benefits of electric vehicles, creating less congested, cleaner cities for future generations."

The technology is also due to be introduced on the Qashqai by the end of the year, with the firm suggesting in December 2016 that by 2020, 10 Nissan and/or Renault cars will be sold with the technology.

In December, the company released a report suggesting self-driving vehicles could add as much as ?17 trillion to the European economy by 2050, with the boost in earning equating to 5.3% in GDP over today's levels.
