One in three drivers open to the idea of autonomous vehicles

Date: 01 December 2017   |   Author: Rachel Boagey

One in three drivers are open to the idea of autonomous vehicles, according to research revealed at AutoConnect in Milton Keynes.

The event organised by marketing agency Clarity revealed the results of research the company commissioned by BDRC Continental into consumer attitudes to the future of automotive transport.

AutoConnect featured speakers from leading automotive innovators and future-focused companies. At the event Clarity revealed from the research that 57% of people are aware of autonomous vehicles as a concept, and that one in three would consider switching from their main form of transport to an autonomous vehicle, with 7% extremely likely to make the switch. According to the research, London and the North West are appeal 'hotspots' for autonomous driving.

As well as looking at the future of autonomous driving, the survey also revealed that non-car ownership schemes such as car sharing appeals to around one in four UK drivers. One in three (33%) are aware of car sharing services such as Zipcar or Liftshare, rising to 54% in London. In addition, 15% have used such a service.

Two thirds (64%) are aware of on-demand driver services such as Uber or Gett and awareness is significantly higher in the capital. One in four people questioned have used such a service.

However, despite this apparent movement towards advanced driving technologies, just 3% of respondents currently own a vehicle with a hybrid engine. A total of 70% own a petrol-powered vehicle and 39% a diesel, while 36% claim to know a lot about new types of cars such as hybrid and electric vehicles.

Chris Kirby, Clarity's director of automotive, said: "Clarity has been working with major clients in the automotive industry for more than ten years and it was clear to us that there was a need for a forum where all the key players could come together and share their knowledge of the industry and their perceptions for its future."
