Overclaiming on expenses costs economy £1.6bn a year

More than a third of professionals who drive for work have overclaimed on their mileage expenses, a new survey has revealed.

According to a poll of 1,000 drivers by fuelcard giant Allstar, a further 17% said they deliberately overclaim on their expenses each month, while 41% claimed there's nothing wrong with doing this, despite it being illegal.

Allstar also found that 55% of those who said they overclaimedrespondents admitted to adding up to 10% onto their expenses claim each month, while a quarter said they claim 20% extra onto their expenses.

The fuelcard giant said people overclaiming on expenses this could cost the economy as much as £1.6bn a year.

When asked why they overclaim, 40% said they feel they aren't paid enough, while just over a third (36%) claimed they do this to make up for lost receipts, and 29% said they do it because their colleagues also overclaim on expenses.

"It is of no doubt that our research has revealed some shocking findings and it appears overclaiming is a very big problem for British businesses," said Paul Baker, vice-president of customer management at Allstar. "Not only is it costing individual companies, it is also having a much bigger impact on our wider economy as a whole and people don't seem to care that it is both dishonest and illegal."

Baker added that the majority spend between one and two hours a month working on their expenses claims. He said this time could be better spent working on more productive tasks.added:"We also found that 80% spend between 1-2 hours a month working on their expenses claims each month. Those hours spent processing could be better spent working on more productive tasks."

The five business sectors most likely to overclaim on expenses:

Creative arts - 50%

Energy and utilities - 46%

Information, research and analysis - 40%

Environment and agriculture - 36%

Business, consulting and management - 29%
