Polestar launched as Volvo's standalone electric performance brand

Date: 18 October 2017

Polestar, Volvo's performance brand, has revealed its future as a standalone electric brand alongside the firm's first car, which is set to roll off the production line in mid-2019.

The aptly-named Polestar 1 will rival the BMW M4 and is powered by two electric motors that drive the rear wheels in tandem with Volvo's Drive-E 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Built on Volvo's Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), the 600hp four-seat coupe will offer around 90 miles of pure electric driving, currently the biggest range of any hybrid vehicle.

The Polestar 1 will be built in the all-new, purpose-built Polestar Production Centre under construction in Chengdu, China, which is due for completion in mid-2018.

Thomas Ingenlath, chief executive officer of Polestar, said; "Polestar 1 is the first car to carry the Polestar on the bonnet. A beautiful GT with amazing technology packed into it - a great start for our new Polestar brand. All future cars from Polestar will feature a fully electric drivetrain, delivering on our brand vision of being the new standalone electric performance brand."

According to the firm, cars will only be available to order online and offered on a two- or three-year subscription basis, which will incorporate features such as pick-up and delivery servicing and the ability to rent alternative vehicles within the Volvo and Polestar range into one monthly payment.

The company also confirmed that all future cars from Polestar will have a fully electric powertrain and that the firm's second car, the Polestar 2, will start production later in 2019. The mid-sized electric model, Volvo's first electric car, will compete directly with the Tesla Model 3 and will be followed by a larger SUV-style electric car, the Polestar 3.

Order books for the new Polestar 1 are now open with deliveries expected in around two years time.
