The start point for the best source of fleet information

Put fuel duty costs on receipts, urges MPs

Date: 01 February 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The amount of money generated by fuel duty could be shown on receipts under new plans unveiled by MPs.

As part of the Vehicle Fuel (Publication of Tax Information) Bill introduced by Conservative MP Peter Aldous this would allow motorists to see how much tax they pay to the Government in fuel duty and VAT every time they fill up.

The RAC said that at present, 65% of the price of fuel goes to the Treasury, making the cost of the fuel itself 42p, based on the current 120p a litre fuel price, while the motoring organisation said fuel duty raises £27bn a year for the UK's coffers.

Promoted by fuel price campaigners FairFuel UK, the proposal is also backed by the RAC.

"Motorists know how much Vehicle Excise Duty they have to pay to keep their vehicle on the road so it seems ridiculous they have no idea how much duty they are paying to the Treasury when they fill their vehicles with fuel," said RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams. "This bill really shouldn't be controversial. It is just a long overdue form of transparency that everyone who drives a vehicle ought to be entitled to see.

"We would hope that MPs from all sides of the House will show their support by allowing this bill to progress and that the Government takes notice of just how popular this measure would be with motorists," he added.
