Reduce drink-drink limit in England and Wales, says IAM RoadSmart

Date: 02 February 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Road safety charity IAM RoadSmart has called for England and Wales to reduce the legal alcohol limit levels following a stablisation in drink-drink levels in Britain.

According to Government statistics for 2015 published today, 1,380 people were killed or seriously injured when at least one driver was over the limit, up from 1,310 in 2014.

The total number of collisions and accidents where at least one driver was over the limit also increased, by 2% to 5,740.

Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart director of policy and research, called on the Government follow Scotland's lead and reduce the drink-drive limit to 50mg per 100ml of blood, down from today's 80mg limit.

Making the limit tougher would also bring England Wales into line with other European countries, including Italy, Holland and Spain, while Greig called on the Government to make drink-driving rehabilitation courses mandatory, rather than optional.

"The increase in serious injury crashes and the overall increase in drink related crashes is worrying and suggests the problem is not reducing among a hardcore of drivers willing to take the risk," Greig said. "The only way to catch those who ignore the limit is through intelligence led high profile policing so investment in roads policing must be protected."
