SME fleet managers spend 32 hours a month on fleet admin, says Allstar

Fleet managers at small to medium-sized businesses spend an average of 32 hours a month on fleet administration with little supporting knowledge or tools to help them.

That's according to new research by fuel card giant Allstar, which has created a small-medium business guide to servicing, maintaining and repairing (SMR) company vehicles in an attempt to help time-poor managers.

Allstar also found that almost all (98%) of those responsible for fleets of up to 50 vehicles were additionally accountable for a number of other tasks such as general management, finance, sales, marketing and HR.

In addition, the fuel card giant revealed that possible time and money-saving tools were not being ultilised by managers, with 65% admitting they manually approve all SMR work and 82% saying they do not get any discounts from suppliers on SMR work.

The guide covers six key areas to help managers that have found themselves with fleet responsibilities:

  • Why SMR is important
  • How to create an SMR policy
  • How to choose suppliers
  • How to manage drivers and book work
  • The financial aspect
  • Management tools

"We've created this guide so that those managing SMR for fleets at small-medium businesses can benefit from the insights we have, building confidence and skills in managing fleet maintenance as efficiently as possible," said Nick Webb, marketing director at Allstar. "Fitting SMR management around other responsibilities means many will have limited time to investigate new management tools and methods, but that shouldn't mean they miss out on time and money-saving options."

Allstar recently partnered with Visa to launch a new combined fuel and travel-expense card called Allstar Plus. The contactless card allows businesses to control both fuel and travel spending, such as train tickets, via a dedicated product, with the firm claiming it is offering a "total mobility payment solution" for customers.

It provides fleet managers with data from all fuel purchases, including odometer readings and the type of fuel purchased, cutting down on paperwork such as receipts.

According to Allstar, spending caps can be placed on the card, and employers can define which sectors workers are able to make purchases from through broad categories ?such as the food industry.
