Supermarkets cut price of diesel by 2p a litre

Date: 04 May 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Three of the 'big four' supermarkets have dropped the price of fuel from today.

Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco have all dropped the pump price of unleaded by 1p a litre and chopped 2p a litre off the price of diesel.

Morrisons said it dropped the price of fuel in response to falling wholesale costs thanks to a recent strengthening of the pound against the dollar.

According to RAC Fuel Watch data, the wholesale price of petrol fell by 3.5p during April and the wholesale cost of diesel fell by 2.5p during the course of the month.

The retailer, which has 333 UK filling stations, said it is "determined to reduce prices quickly when it can".

Roger Fogg, Morrisons services director said: "We are again bringing prices down quickly and we hope that this move will help motorists' budgets stretch a little further."

Sainsbury's, meanwhile, said the cut in fuel prices across its network of 308 forecourts would "provide great value for millions of motorists".

"This is a great piece of news for our customers after the bank holiday weekend and we hope it'll help them to balance their budgets in the run up to summer holidays," said Izzy Hexter, Sainsbury's fuel buying manager.

Peter Cattell, fuel director at Tesco, said: "At Tesco we are committed to everyday low prices on all of our products which is why we're dropping the cost of petrol and diesel at our 500 filling stations across the UK."

The RAC welcomed the fuel price cuts but said more could be done by retailers and called on further reductions.

"A penny on unleaded is simply not enough. It would be good if they surprised motorists with a bullish 3p a litre cut. This is long overdue as our April Fuel Watch figures indicate that prices should be coming down," said RAC Fuel Watch spokesman Simon Williams. "Motorists need to be able to trust retailers to be transparent when they are benefitting from significant savings in the wholesale price. It is time to do the right thing and drop prices."
