Thieves to target high-value 'prestige' cars in 2017

Date: 11 January 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Continuing advances in vehicle connectivity systems could present wider opportunities for criminals to steal cars in 2017, stolen vehicle recovery expert Tracker has warned.

Andy Barrs, police liaison officer at Tracker, said that last year (2016) many thieves used readily-available devices to unlock cars fitted with remote keyless technology. Furthermore, he went on to predict that such crimes will continue to be "rife" this year.

A report by the Home Office last year found that organised criminals "had adapted extremely well to modern security technology".

Barrs predicted that criminals will focus on high-value vehicles this year thanks to a number of new prestige models fitted with connectivity services, such as built-in wi-fi, advanced safety systems and smartphone integration, due to hit the market this year.

"The good news is that manufacturers continue to invest in the electronic security of their remote access systems, to safeguard against criminals. However, it's probably fair to say that if car makers are ahead at the moment, their advantage is only slight and very short term," he warned.

Despite a sharp increase in hi-tech car thefts , he added that "traditional methods" of stealing cars, such as breaking into houses to steal the keys, are here to stay.
