The start point for the best source of fleet information

TMC creates electric AFR and AMAP guide

Date: 06 June 2017   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Mileage audit and fuel expenses auditing firm TMC has published advice on reimbursing drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The company has decided to publish the advice as the UK Government does not currently publish advisory fuel rates (AFR) or approved mileage allowance payments (AMAP) for either vehicle category.

The Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO) has long been lobbying HMRC to include electric and plug-in AFRs and last month provided real-world reimbursement figures to the Government.

ACFO said the absence of defined reimbursement rates deters some companies from adding plug-in vehicles to their choice lists, as calculating reimbursement rates manually and then getting them approved by HMRC would be labour-intensive.

TMC's guide shows how fleets can calculate rates and apply them in place of the current AFRs and AMAPs.

"We want to help business to capture EVs' and hybrids' fuel cost savings by applying rates that fairly reflect their real-world cost-per-mile potential," said Paul Hollick, managing director of TMC. "Uncertainty around reimbursing for electric and hybrid mileage is undoubtedly holding back fleets' adoption of ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs), which is a pity given their fuel cost and tax advantages and immunity from future air quality legislation.

He added: "We hope our advice will give companies the confidence to move forward with ULEVs rather than waiting for the day when, or perhaps if, HMRC responds with AFRs for plug-ins and plug-in hybrids."
