Warning issued over winter car thefts

Date: 26 November 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Drivers are at risk of having their vehicles stolen when leaving them unattended with the engine running during winter.

According to vehicle recovery firm Tracker, 47% of drivers admit to leaving their car warming up on frosty mornings.

This is despite rising numbers of car thefts - up 40% in England and Wales during the last five years according to government figures.

Tracker head of police liaison Clive Wain said: "December and January are peak months for thefts, as it's when we typically experience harsh frosty mornings.

"Whilst it is tempting to leave your car running with the keys in the ignition on frosty cold mornings, experience tells us it's not a wise move.

"Not only does it make your car an easy target for opportunistic thieves, few insurers will pay out if you haven't taken reasonable care to prevent your car from being stolen."

Wain added that drivers also risked being victims of crime if they left Christmas shopping visible in their car while parked.

He said: "If you leave your shopping visible in your car, not all insurance policies cover vehicle contents, especially high value technology.

"Drivers should therefore never leave their cars vulnerable, but especially now when thieves are looking to exploit the change in weather
