BMW reveals new X4

Date: 14 February 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

BMW has launched a new version of its coupe-inspired X4 SUV.

The car is 81mm longer than the outgoing model, with 54mm added to the wheelbase and 37mm of extra width overall.

Despite this, BMW says it has saved up to 50kg in weight depending on the specification, and reduced aerodynamic drag by around 10%.

The car will initially go on sale in the UK with a choice of two diesel-engined models - the 20d and the sporty M40d.

The 20d, priced from £42,900, offers 190hp, gets from 0-62mph in eight seconds, has official combined fuel economy of 52.3mpg, and CO2 emissions of 142g/km.

The M40d, priced from £55,315, offers 326hp, gets from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds, has official combined fuel economy of 44.1mpg, and CO2 emissions of 170g/km.

A 265hp diesel engine and 360hp petrol engine are set to follow, but UK prices for these are not yet confirmed.

Four-wheel drive is standard across the range.

The new X4 comes as standard with cruise control with braking function, and collision and pedestrian warning with city collision mitigation.

There's also a Driving Assistant Plus safety package available with features including steering and lane control assistant at speeds between 0 and 130mph, lane-keeping assist with active side collision protection, and crossing traffic warning and crossroads warning systems.

Also available is Parking Assistant Plus, which helps drivers select and manoeuvre into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.

Digital services on offer through BMW ConnectedDrive include compatibility with Apple and Android smartphones, and Amazon Alexa personal assistants.

Order books open on Thursday 15 February.
