Choice of hybrid powertrains for new Toyota Auris

Date: 07 March 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Toyota has announced that its new Auris hatchback range will include a choice of hybrid powertrain options.

The car, which has made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, will be available with either a 1.8-litre, 120hp or 2.0-litre, 177hp hybrid engine, or a conventional 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine.

No diesel engine will be available.

Toyota says the 1.8-litre hybrid will offer up to 50% all-electric driving during everyday commuting, while the 2.0-litre hybrid will feature steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

The new Auris is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, and features a low centre of gravity, multi-link rear suspension, and a more rigid body shell through the use of high-strength steel reinforcement in key areas.

Compared with the previous Auris, the new model is 40mm longer, with the extension entirely contained within the wheelbase, and 30mm wider, while the car's height has been reduced by 25mm.

Toyota has confirmed that the new Auris will be built in the UK at its plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, with the majority of engines also made in the UK at Deeside in North Wales.

UK specifications and prices, and an on-sale date are yet to be confirmed.
