Jaguar Land Rover announces all-terrain autonomous car project

A project to create self-driving cars that can drive off road has been announced by Jaguar Land Rover.

The firm says its £3.7 million Cortex project will explore all-terrain, all-weather autonomous capability.

It says world-first '5D' technology, combining acoustic, video, radar, light detection and distance sensing (LiDAR) data live in real-time, is being engineered.

This improves the car's awareness of its environment, allowing it to behave in an increasingly sophisticated way to handle any weather condition or terrain.

Jaguar Land Rover connected and autonomous vehicle research manager Chris Holmes said: "It's important that we develop our self-driving vehicles with the same capability and performance customers expect from all Jaguars and Land Rovers.

"Self-driving is an inevitability for the automotive industry, and ensuring that our autonomous offering is the most enjoyable, capable and safe is what drives us to explore the boundaries of innovation.

"Cortex gives us the opportunity to work with some fantastic partners whose expertise will help us realise this vision in the near future."

The technology involved in the Cortex project will be developed through algorithm development, sensor optimisation and physical testing on off-road tracks in the UK.

The project also includes input from experts at the University of Birmingham and Myrtle AI.
