Mercedes-Benz A-Class saloon goes on sale

Date: 06 September 2018   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Mercedes-Benz has begun taking orders for the new saloon version of its A-Class small family car.

The saloon is available with a choice of two trims - Sport and AMG Line - and two engines: a 1.5-litre, 116hp diesel and a 1.3-litre, 163hp petrol, both paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Official combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures are 68.9mpg and 110g/km for the diesel, and 51.4mpg and 121g/km for the petrol.

Standard equipment with Sport trim includes twin 7in displays, one of which is a central touchscreen with the MBUX multimedia system and Hey Mercedes voice activation.

There's also a DAB radio, 17in alloy wheels, automatic two-zone climate control, active lane keeping assist, speed limit assist, and keyless starting.

Stepping up to AMG Line trim adds equipment including 18in alloy wheels, AMG sports bodystyling and a sports steering wheel.

In addition, equipment packages are available including Executive, which expands the central touchscreen to 10.25in and adds active parking assist, heated front seats and upgraded mirrors.

Premium also adds all this equipment, plus a 10.25in cockpit display, 64-colour ambient lighting, illuminated door sills, full keyless-go, an upgraded sound system and a rear armrest.

Premium Plus builds on these further with electric memory seats for the driver and front passenger, multibeam LED headlights with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, and a panoramic sunroof.

An Advanced Navigation package is also available - but only in conjunction with one of the other packages - providing augmented reality sat-nav and traffic sign assist.

Prices for the A-Class saloon, for which the first deliveries will take place in early 2019, are: £27,875 for a Sport diesel; £28,095 for a Sport petrol; £29,075 for an AMG Line diesel; and £29,295 for an AMG Line petrol.

Equipment package prices are: £1,395 for Executive; £2,395 for Premium; £3,595 for Premium Plus; and £495 for Advanced Navigation.

Mercedes has also made a new 2.0-litre, 190hp petrol engine available with the A-Class hatchback.

Available with AMG-Line trim only, it achieves official economy and emissions figures of 45.6mpg and 141g/km when specified with front-wheel drive, or 43.5mpg and 148g/km with four-wheel drive.
